Antique Kitchen Tables - An Eyesore Or a Treasure?

!±8± Antique Kitchen Tables - An Eyesore Or a Treasure?

Are you one of those people who look at antique furniture and say to your self - that's just old junk. Crap. And standing right beside you is your friend who is just about to faint over the new piece she just found.

Well sooner or later you may have to love that antique look.

We all love our granny, grandma - whatever we call the loving old woman who raised our parent but more importantly, the endearing person who showers us with unconditional love. And because she constantly babies you every now and then, should she leave you a family heirloom - no, not any jewelries but a table. What are you going to do with it? Remember that the table, no matter how simple it looks, did come from your sweet old grandma so you have to accept it with a more-than grateful heart.

Okay, so it's not that bad after all, the kitchen she left you with is antique and has outlived more than three generations before you, maybe even more. So now you get it, the table is a treasure and there's no rule of any kind that's stopping you to spice it up! Yes, you can re-furnish your grandma's table and give a more modern touch and feel to it.

Antique kitchen tables can be polished with beeswax once or twice a year. Others maintain the flawless look by putting a crystal cover on top to minimize any scratches.

Take good care of this unique heirloom if you can - after all, it is special to the person special to you.

Antique tables may not always be your first choice, but they can play an important role in helping to pass down your family history. So be happy, take especially good care of the table, and tell your children that they too will one day be so lucky.

Do-It-Yourself Decorating

!±8± Do-It-Yourself Decorating

Theme decorating is a very popular way of decorating homes and offices across the US. We live in the melting pot here in the US with people from all over the world. These people want to have reminders of home around them. Then there are those of us who were born here, but have a fascination with another country's style of decor. There was a time when every American home you visited contained traditional American style furniture. Furniture was made from the finest of wood and steal. Today we have so many choices. We are now traveling, importing and exporting furnishings from everywhere in the world.

If you like oriental style furniture and rugs, you can get the most beautiful screens, rugs and other Chinese furniture now in the US or by ordering it straight from China over the internet. Victorian styles have long been admired here in the US as well. People are even trying there hand at decorating rooms in their homes with multi themes. One room may serve as the oriental room while another serves as an American classic. There is no limit to the imagination today.

Some people who travel love to display their souvenirs from other places they've been. A room could be decorated around an African theme with a faux fur bear skin rug, fertility statues and zebra lamps. Another idea could be room based on the Australian outback, or Great Barrier Reef with a coffee table conversation piece from your trip. Right here in America people love the beach and have the beach homes reflect that love.

An open, airy home with sheer window treatments bright colors and a couple of Adirondack chairs on each deck to watch the sun rise and set is the ultimate beach lover's setting. Conch shells from the Caribbean would accent this themed room for example. A piece of driftwood is a free and inspiring addition.

Although a lot of the flowers that grow in the tropics don't grow here, you can create that same sense in your home by painting your walls in tropical blues, greens and melons. Some people are even having murals painted in certain rooms of their homes. You want to make sure you see the artists' best work. One wall featuring this bold color of choice works well also.

Bold strips and patterns were once designated for wallpaper. That is no longer the case. With a roll of painters' tape, you can create a professional finish of your own design.

Whatever your desires in decorating are, today they can be brought to fruition. If you can't make your dream happen with the resources at your local home improvement store, the internet makes it all possible. Whether interior or exterior decorating, you can make it happen within your budget. Yard sales and second hand stores sometimes carry global treasures someone else thought was trash. With a little refurbishing it can be new again. If the budget doesn't allow for your decorating vision, do it yourself.

The Writing Desk - A Fine Piece of Furniture

!±8± The Writing Desk - A Fine Piece of Furniture

The writing desk has long been a sign of aristocratic or refined taste. While modern designs of writing desks have changed to accommodate the changes in technology, antique writing desks have long been considered wonderful pieces of furniture that hinted at sophistication while also working in a practical manner for the owner.

Writing desks also worked as a compact office, with everything needed in one area. In the old times these were specifically designed for individuals who were writing letters by hand, though because of the changes in technology many of these desks also double as computer (or at the very least, laptop) desks now.

Many of the old school writing desks will have roll top covers, while many modern styles of writing desks are simpler, without the roll top. Individuals who want a desk that is aesthetically pleasing will often times go for the roll top writing desks since that cover allows for an easy way of hiding private work from public viewing while adding a pleasing aesthetic elegance.

Most of the oldest antique writing desks are English, and were manufactured in England following the Restoration in the late 1600s. Oak and walnut are the two most common used for these pieces of antique furniture, as they were the most common wood available at the time, with Walnut the trendy pick of that age.

If you're looking for a modern writing desk, there are several questions you will want to ask yourself. Are you looking for function, or do you care more about form? Do you like the old styles of furniture and desks, or do you like something much more simple and modern? How much are you willing to spend for the perfect writing desk? Are you looking for one where you can use your computer or laptop, as well?

All these questions make a major difference in determining what type of furniture you will want to look at purchasing. A good writing desk to use a laptop on that will fit in the bedroom is far different from a desk that will go out in the study and will act as a good looking piece of furniture to fit in with an all wood office.

There are plenty of places to look over literally hundreds of different choices. This is another good idea of what specifically you're looking for before searching, so you're not overwhelmed. The perfect writing desk is out there somewhere for you, now you just need to find it!
